I have been playing around with faces, and although I do like doing them, they never really look as they should.
I also posted the before and after simply because I personally always seem to like the before sketch.

Great job on both of these...I do like the top one for it's simplicity and the second is nice in color and dimension.

Tonniece, you did a lovely job! I like how soft the colorings are. They make him seem very gentle. Ahhh … a gentleman :)
I like the proportions and the colouring works really well. My only thought is to wonder about the light source. The light is very diffuse, and there's hardly any shadowy areas, except a little under the chin, which suggests a light source on the right hand side of the picture. But this isn't carried through in the face. Do you see what I mean? So it leaves it looking a little flat. Is this what you were dissatisfied with? (Hope you don't mind me commenting like this!)

Thanks for the nice comments. I really like the lines of the face, and hope to some day do portraits.

I don't mind at all. I really want to get it right, and love any and all comments that help me to reach that goal. I have gone through most of my sketches and found that the ones I did in color are pretty much the same. Thanks for pointing that out to me. That's probably why I don't like them. I don't know too much about blending colors yet so this will be my next challenge.
Getting tonal value right is one of the hardest things I find. I wouldn't want you to think I was an expert on doing it! (wry grin) I think, if I were you, I'd try working on this issue in graphite, as tonal values are much easier to see in greyscale. Then once you are happy that you can "see" the values in greyscale, then move on to colour, and the problem of mixing just the right value (tone) of the shade (hue). I find that hard but it's even harder when you are painting in thread!
I love both faces, that Nola isn't she smart, boy she is the girl to go to get get the answers.. I agree with her, couldn't have said it like she does though LOL...
Love the green eyes..
Tonniece, I’ve been looking at this handsome guy’s picture over and over again. Actually, I see some shading on the left side of his face, granted it’s quite light. Perhaps you might want to darken it slightly (especially around the cheek bone area), but not as dark as his neck.
*I agree with Dianne, he has the most captivating green eyes :)
I keep looking at him too, I think I must have an afinity for GREEN eyes as I keep doing them that color. Although, Danny's eyes are the prettiest blue which I just love. LOL I call him blue eyes all the time.
Thanks for the insight Nola and Luci, I really do welcome the advise, and the encouragement from you ALL.
